I've been running consistently for almost twenty years. I've done a couple of marathons. 

Short-Term Running Goals:

In 2016: At least 17 miles a week, 67 a month, 800 for the year

Sub 26:00 5K

Sub 55:00 10K

Sub 2:00 half (if I decide to do one this year :)

 

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run another marathon, maybe. Someday. If I feel like it.

Personal:

I love my husband and my four children and running lets me spend more time with them!

I may have redefined "slow miles" this morning. It was my first run with my running partner in a couple of weeks and we were both pretty leery of all the little sparkly spots in the road that we feared were lurking sheets of ice. But hey, we got in three miles and we didn't break any bones. I think that will have to satisfy me for the next couple of months. 

And now a few words on 2015 (the obligatory New Year's post). Even though miles dropped off sharply the last couple of weeks, I ended 2014 much better than I started it. I'd like to make lots of ambitious plans for mileage and marathons this year, but reality says that as long as I'm going to school, that's not going to happen. I do have to say that setting new goals for this year is much easier because I can look back at weekly and monthly averages from last year. Thank you fastrunningblog! I've always logged my miles on a paper calendar before and this is really so much better (unpaid endorsement :) Having said all that, I've decided that I'd like to shoot for 15 miles a week, 50 miles a month and 600 for the year. I realize that 15 miles a week adds up to more than 50 miles a month, but 15 is a nice easy number to keep track of, and if I fall short occassionally there is still hope for attaining my monthly and yearly goals. The yearly goal isn't much higher than what I did this year, and I know I can do more than 50 a month in the summer, so I guess what I'm really trying to focus on is being more consistent the other nine months of the year and getting that monthly mileage up a bit. If I can do that, 600 miles for the year will be easily attainable and I'll set my sights even higher in 2016.

We did my old three mile route this morning. It was nice to get away from the all the cars near the high school, but crossing 6th was scary.

The same route I did on Monday. It's a sorry a little excuse for a run, but it was all I had time for, and hey - I ran! If I can get a nice five-miler in tomorrow I'll have met my goal for the week for the first time in a very long time. It sounds like an excuse, but I recognized I was going to have a little more flexiblilty this week and I deliberately went for shorter runs so I didn't up my mileage too drastically in one week. If my schedule continues to cooperate I'd love to get back to 4 three mile runs during the week and a six miler on Saturday. We'll just have to wait and see!

Despite the fact that my washing machine decided to fill itself for three full hours last night, flooding half the tv room and interupting a perfectly good night's sleep, we managed to get the full route in before I borrowed Brenda's fan and went home to sop up some more soggy carpet.

It was a strange week with a lot of unexpected kinks in the schedule that made finding time to run really difficult. Hopefully next week will be smoother.

Mondays are the most difficult day for running this semester (I guess I could forego grocery shopping, but I did that occassionally last semester and learned that you can only go so many days without milk, eggs, bread or cereal before the teenage boys revolt). I've decided to be okay with only running Tuesday - Saturday, but trying to be consistent those five days in a row. I accidently ended up with forty free minutes before I had to be in class this morning, so I squeezed in a short run and a shower. I actually made it to class on time - hair dripping wet. I tried to run a little faster than usual since I was in a hurry, but I think it took me just a long. Hmm.

I had a nice four-miler planned for today. I was going to get up early, but due to circumstances beyond my control I wasn't in bed until almost 1:00 last night. I should have got up anyway, but I know from experience that sleep is as important to my health and well-being as running is. I have to find a way to fit both. Anyway. My half-mile run was on top of Cedar Mountain late this afternoon. Remind me never to go up there in the winter ever again. My oldest son wanted to run up the C trail and he asked me to meet him at the top and give him a ride back. It's been so dry this month, it never occured to me there would be snow up there (guess I'm still new around here). Driving in the snow is not my favorite activity, and a snow-packed mountain road with a drop off and no road barriers is the stuff my nightmares are made of. Anyway - I didn't get stuck, but I eventually parked in a dry patch and ran to meet him at the top of the C and drive him back down. At least he got 4-5 miles out of it. The things I do for my children.....

I'd just like to say that turning 40 stinks. Actually, I haven't turned 40 yet, but it's on the horizon and I don't like it. I haven't really been concerned about it until the last couple of months when my body suddenly decided that gaining weight is fun and maintaining fitness should be really hard. We're only talking about a couple of pounds here, but it's different from what I'm used to, and it feels like a trend, and I don't like it. 

Ran to the aquatic center and back today. It was a perfectly beautiful day.

Gorgeous run up the canyon with my valentine this morning (ok - that was cheesy, but it might be the only date we get so I have to make the most of it). The uphill half was a little rough. I've been really short of breath the last couple of runs, but I didn't have heart palpitations today which was an improvement. We took it slow, and it was a perfect day for savoring the spectacular scenery and incredible weather. Actually it was a perfect Valentine's Day date - now if only the Waffle Love truck were still in town....

A "longer" run today :)  Somehow it managed to be uphill both ways. Some people would say that means it was flat, but that was definitely not the case. It just took three-fourths of the run to get up the hill and then the last little bit was all down. I think I'll do the route backwards next time. Might as well get the torture over with as soon as possible and then enjoy a pleasant 3 miles afterwards.

So I went five days without running, but it was about the craziest weekend of the year and I'm completely happy to have made it all the places I needed to be and accomplished all the critical tasks I needed to do. I'm pleased enough with my consistency lately I feel like I can have an easy week and not beat myself up over it.

3-ish miles with Eric. He showed me some of the dirt trails on the hill that I've never been on before. We encountered immense jack rabbits (I thought the first one was a small deer), a seriously long snake, and an unexpected stone wall (I hope his ankle is okay). It was a fun run!

Another run with Eric this morning (spring break is fun). We went up the canyon and then climbed a small trail to a beautiful spot overlooking some spectacular scenery. I'm taking his word for it on the distane. It was an easy run for him and a great workout for me. Thanks, Eric!

Last day. I was literally the only one on the track this morning as we pulled back into Long Beach. This was probably good thing because an early morning rain left everything soaked and things were a little slippery. I guess I could have gone down to the gym and used a treadmill, but it would have been a tragedy to miss out on an opportunity to breathe the fresh sea air just after a rain shower. I developed a nasty cold yesterday, which led to a miserable night filled with excessive nose blowing and an uncomfortably painful dry throat. Most of the time I wasn't sleeping I was planning on the best time to text my running partner in the morning and tell her I wasn't up for a run. I must have fallen asleep at some point though because I woke up to my alarm, feeling marginally better, so I laced up my shoes and met her anyway. It's been an achy, congested sort of day, but I am optimistic about tomorrow.

Ran out to Industrial Road and back on Airport Road with Adam. Didn't leave until 8:15 and it was getting hot. Plenty of shade and downhill on the way out, just the opposite on the way back. A strong heart palpitation encouraged me to slow down a bit and we stopped for water at a Maverik and then a cool down in some shade. It felt more like 5 miles, but it wasn't. I absolutely love running at 6 am this time of year, but late nights are getting in the way.

I didn't actually RUN seven miles, but I walked/ran a 5k to set up cones on the race course. Then I walked/ran the same course a couple of hours later to pick up the cones, and then I ran about a mile in the middle to and from the other end of the park where the race started. All I know is that it was a lot, and I was pretty sore later. I actually had a little IT band flare-up in my hip (which I've never had before - it's always my knee), but it's going away.

Today is the day - it's Amazon.com's birthday! And mine. I'm not sure whether being exactly twice as old as Amazon is depressing, cool, or just kind of weird. It's been a busy, crazy week and I didn't get out on a run until almost 11 today. It was hot, but not as hot as it could have been. I spent the entire three miles contemplating my new status as a forty year old and wondering if I should do something special to commemorate the event. I should probably have done some crazy training and run forty miles today, but that's a totaly normal, insane thing for a runner to do, and probably would have left me immobile for the rest of the summer. Not worth it, in my humble opinion. I have some twin cousins that marked their thirtieth birthday by donating thirty baby blankets to a charity. That would have been brilliant if I'd thought of it a year ago. So then I thought maybe I should choose something to do over the next several weeks or months - forty random acts of kindness or something. And then I thought of what I really want to do, which has nothing to do with turning forty, but would be cool. Maybe I'll get my landscaping act together and plant the Lambert-Erickson Memorial Raspberry Garden and the Brunson-Jensen Memorial Flower Garden (with roses and irises and snap dragons), and an Oregon Shade Garden with hostas and ferns. I'm so ready to have beautiful gardens around my house. I've been lacking time, money and motivation for too long. Maybe I can figure out a way to do it this year. It's not as selfless as donations to charity, but I think it might be a cool way to honor my grandparents and my husband's grandparents and keep their memories close.

We've settled into a pattern for Mon, Wed, Fri. Unfortunately, I have class those days so I won't be able to do more than 2.8. Not quite as impressive as it looks. My feet are hurting - a lot, and I know I've got some tendinitis going on in my feet/ankles, and I had a million things to do today, and I didn't run at all on Tuesday because I had a paper due, so I decided to cut my long run a little shorter this morning and I just did 6.5. But then I didn't have the car and I had to get to campus for a lesson, and then home again. And then I did have the car but I had to take it in for a safety inspection, so I dropped it off and then walked home, and then back again to pick it up. And it turns out I live exactly one mile from campus and exactly one mile from the car place, and I, of course, was running late every time so I walked FAST, so I am counting those miles. I did soak my feet in the middle of the day, which helped, and then wore my Birkenstocks after that, which also helped. I think I just need to live in my Birks for the next few days and then I'll be okay. Maybe it's time for a second pair of quality shoes. I should probably start with some new ones for running; it's been two years :/
